Who are we without our memories? Are we the same person at all?
Theatre Northwest’s season theme of “Identity” examines these questions
with Steven Dietz’s fantasy children’s play, "Still Life with Iris".
The residents of the otherworldly Nocturno work overnight to make the
‘real’ world normal for the rest of us during the day – helping the sun
to rise, creating clouds and lightning bolts; even painting spots on
ladybugs. One night a mysterious man comes to Iris, a precocious young
girl recently chosen to be the Fog Lifter, and makes her an offer she
cannot refuse…but it entails taking her PastCoat – an item that holds
the remembrance of things past for Nocturno’s individual residents.
What will the loss of her past mean for her future?
The play received the American Alliance of Theatre Education
Distinguished Play Award, and was the first play for young audiences to
receive the Kennedy Center’s Fund for New American Plays Award.
