Many changes have happened around the square in Maryville since the town was settled in 1845. Location of the courthouse, building materials used, and the types of shops available are just a few of the differences. According to an 1868 account of a newcomer stepping off the stage coach in town, the empty lot at the southwest corner of the intersection of Third and Main Streets was a chicken coop.
At 2pm, Sunday, August 20, Tom Carneal will be presenting a program on the changes around the courthouse square. The program will be held at the Nodaway County Historical Society Museum, at 110 North Walnut Street, Maryville MO. Please join us and add your memories of the businesses that lined the courthouse square. The program is free; donations are always welcome. Museum hours are Tuesdays through Fridays, 1:00 to 4:00 and other days by appointment.
