Open House at Nodaway County Historical Society
On Sunday, June 10, Nodaway County Historical Society invites visitors to an open house, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., of all three facilities, the Caleb Burns Home: A Working Man’s Museum, Hickory Grove School House and the main museum building, at 110 N. Walnut Street, Maryville, MO. Bob Bohlken will briefly discuss Folk Sayings of Northwest Missouri relevant to kitchen and household topics at the Caleb Burns Home, 422 W. Second Street, at 2:00 p.m. and again at 3:00 p.m. Guests are encouraged to view the displays inside as well as the historic flowers and herb garden out back. Refreshments will be served at Caleb Burns Home.
The Hickory Grove Schoolhouse, built in 1883, was originally located in the Clearmont area until the consolidation of schools within the county in 1960. It was bought and donated to NCHS. It is located just west of the parking lot beside the main museum building. Tom Carneal will be available to tell visitors about the history of the school.
The main building will be open for guests to view the displays. As an addition, educational materials will be available for educators to preview. Faculty and students from NWMSU’s elementary education department used NCHS displays to create various traveling trunks, pre-visit units, and programs to be used at the museum by the teachers. A variety of grade levels and subject matters will be displayed and available for scheduling. Cathy Palmer will be there to speak to those interested.
NCHS is handicap accessible except for the second floor of the Caleb Burns Home. For further information, please call the museum at 660-582-8176 or Cathy Palmer at 660-541-1321.
