The Nodaway County Historical Society will be hosting a Traveling the Jefferson Highway program at 2 pm, Sunday, August 6, featuring Michele Hansford, retired museum director, Carthage, a member of the Missouri Humanities Council Speakers Bureau. The museum is located at 110 N. Walnut St., Maryville, MO.
For the 100th anniversary of the
Jefferson Highway that crossed western Missouri along its international
route from Winnipeg, Canada, to New Orleans, Hansford will discuss how
this early auto trail was designed to foster regional travel and
tourism in the 1920s. Information taken from association publications,
digitized documents, and local newspapers will highlight the highway's
impact on towns along its path such as St. Joseph, Kansas City, and
Joplin, while also providing the story of its longtime promoter James D.
Clarkson.
The program is free, but donations to the museum are always welcome. Please call 660-582-8176 with any questions.
